|
|
Hello there. Well the time has come to put our bug up for sale. We've owned it for four really enjoyable years, and had hoped to keep hold of it for a very long time (if not for ever) but unfortunately it has to make way for another classic car that is on its way
This isn’t a full-on, total resto, perfect show car, but it is a solid, really good looker that is great fun to drive with its vintage speed motor. Recently this year it won a best modified trophy at Beach Buggin’ and a top 10 at Action.
We’ve owned it for four years, a previous owner has done a home resto, repainted the exterior, and fitted the interior (TMI). The interior paint and headliner are original.
We’ve had any work done that’s been necessary over the time we’ve owned it, with a 'no expense spared' approach, because the car was always planned as a keeper. All of the work on it has been done by Farnborough VW centre, E set up the stance and front end. It drives extremely straight and true – on a flat road you can take your hands off the wheel and it will track perfectly straight and solid. It had the heater channels done last year, full job on the passenger side, and the end on the driver’s side. Floor is solid, but it has some scrapes due to how low it rides, similarly it has a bent under the front valence for the same reason. Other bad bits: the doors have bubbling starting in the bottom outer corners, evidence of previous repair in the spare wheel well, and a couple of stone chips and marks in the paint.
Some spec:
Original matching numbers vintage speed motor and gearbox.
4” narrowed king and link beam built by Deluxe Motorworks (Tidders) with German needle bearings fitted.
Kamei rear parcel shelf
Original hooded Albert mirrors on original Albert swan neck arms
Fully working Blaupunkt radio with DIN plug to accept MP3 player input
Fully working 6 volt system
Chrome bumper bars front and rear
Safety star
Window vent trims
The bonus with this car is the motor really. It’s a unique vintage speed unit, based on the original matching numbers 34hp case and ancillaries. We researched it for months and sourced parts from around the world to build it, Alan at GAC motorsport in Aylesbury (formula Vee racing specialists) helped us to work out the spec to make a really strong, low end to mid pulling, fun motor – again E at Farnborough VW built it, a quick run down is below, but I can send endless details about it if you’re interested, it has virtually just been run in, having been completed and installed just before bug jam last year, and having a year of careful and methodical run-in this year.
Original 34hp case, line bored
Original crank
Fully balanced bottom end, rods & pistons
Mahle oversize barrels and pistons, take motor up to 1384cc
Engle 100 cam
Original 373 no suffix, year correct single port heads, completely rebuilt by Formula Vee gurus GAC Motorsport, with over size valves (stainless exhaust valves), bolt on ratio rockers (1.1:1), uprated springs, ported and reprofiled to give a 9:1 compression ratio
Reichert dual solex carb system, hand prepared by Bernd Reichert from NOS OG Solex carbs
Genuine OEM ‘Knetch’ cheese grater air filters
Fram bypass oil filter with Mr Wob oil lines (fully working not ornamental)
Mr Wob Stainless steel Abarth 4-tip exhaust
Bosch VJR4BR25 Distributor rebuilt with NOS parts by distributor guru Glenn Ring in the USA (this is an excellent vintage speed dizzy, same advance as an '010')
Put in a word, the motor is remarkable. It has unbelievable power and torque for a 34hp based unit. Anyway, I could bore you for hours on all aspects of it, as you can well imagine.
If you’d like any further information or photographs, please let me know. You can find pretty much the whole engine build and extensive photographs on this blog we kept during the process of researching and building it: http://www.oldspeed-mouse-motor.blogspot.com/
As for price, it has been hard to work out. The car, if it had an average stock 1200 motor I would rate as a solid £5000 car. The engine cost £6000 for all of the parts, engineering and build. Its agreed value with the insurance is £9500. But we are realistic. Hence a decent, very fair price I think is £7750 as it stands.
If you have any questions, want to see more pictures or more info, just give me a bell on 07930 386669 or email me at vic@sellsell.co.uk The car is in Hove, East Sussex. Tax exempt obviously and MOT'd until August 2010.
Cheers!

Good luck with the sale. This car really is so beautiful if i had waited another year before I bought a bug this would have been it. It totally inspired my car.

Awesome car that always screamed Resto-Cal for me.
I loved the heads up we had on the A3. To put the engine into perspective my set up was a 1600 with twin 40 Dell'orto's and Old Speed won the day up to 85mph, although I think I had you beyond that. The mid range torque is unbelievable. _________________ BBC Member No. 2
