Right then, deep breath...been thinking about your comments overnight and I'm starting to lean towards keeping her on the original pan and forgetting the IRS. Shocked

After all, a Vert is all about crusing and not 'street racing' so I'm thinking I don't really need IRS at the rear. In addition, and this is something that has been bothering me for some time, the car is too historic not to be running around on its OG pan.

So there you go, that just saved a few $$$ Wink I did say the plans would change as the project evolves Laughing

now we are talking the same language Wink Laughing

means you can keep the correct plate then too. after all, most of the greenhearts who have 2 litre + motors, all run swing axle pans Smile

gutted i missed action, would of been good to meet up for a chat Cool

I can only echo what other people have said and just say that the plans sound cool, apart from the IRS bit. Smile

Read this thread ( especially the post by Trayle );

http://restowagenuk.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=7430&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

It changed my views on big engines in resto-cals. I almost went out and ripped the 1914 out of my 65 and put a completely stock 1200 back in it after reading what he posted.
Its all about going low and slow, but its also nice to have a little something under your right foot just in case. Wink

Trent ... 1st congrats on ur new purchase Id heard through the grapevine '' The game was Afoot'' but waited for the outcome . 2nd you do now own one of the rarest cars in Europe if not the world and as the Next keeper you have a certain responsibility Which at times is a blessing and at other times a pain in the Ass.

This car, due to what it is will always bring contraversy with it No matter who owns it or what is done to it ,and therefore people will always have an opinion.

Now unfortunatly for you, You have stumbled into a group of Restowagen Nazi's ......I kid you not . Ive seen a select few on this site and 'You know who you are' Wink Rip a Volksword show '' Show Car '' to bits within a minute of seeing it judging the paint, body , panel fit and stance in this time and TBH the car wasnt good enough to win at the volksworld show . But it did.

My point is that although some of the mods you've talked about are desirable there Not neccessary ' Less is More ' so to speak . The scene and time have evolved and now if you choose to restore the car to stock and original then rim it and slam it You wont have to do anything else .

You already own what many people class as there' Unicorn '

I had the pleasure of helping a few and Mike put the finishing touches
to this car in the weeks leading up to the Volksworld show so i can say I do know the car quite well .

I for one look forward to you finishing Your Unicorn

Very Happy

Tks for the words guys, it's encouraging to know the car has such a following and my plans are generally acceptable.

However, I'm now old enough not to really worry about what others think. My view is simple, if people don't like how the car will turn out then that's their problem as I will certainly not be swayed from the things that really do it for me! Laughing

Doesn't matter what you do someone will always find fault but they're gonna have a tough time with this one as the boys handling the body and paint are well known fellow Restowageneers' who, I feel will take adverse comments about workmanship more than just to heart! Laughing Laughing

Although the car is historic and valuable, I'm the one who stumped up the $$$ to buy it and the reason I did is 'cause I wanted a 50's Vert that I will enjoy owning and more importantly, driving. A 30hp engine with non-sychro trans is obviously not a good fit in todays driving environment so blowing the doors of the GTI brigade aside, Laughing as long as there's nothing than cannot be reversed, she will get a big engine and uprated trans. Wink

A hurdle was overcome today as at last I found a very nice pair of OG Oval front wings (tks Dave) together with an extremely rare, up to May 1955 Blaupunkt A453 radio from the early radio guru Mr Oakley (tks Rich - nice one!).

For interest, I'll try and post piccys of these tomorrow.

This is the main dilema on my mind at the moment!

I personally think that 50s cars should stick with original engines. Maybe with some added period performance.
They just look 'right' with OG engines in IMO.
Smile

BTW not slatting anyone who wants to go the big engine route in a 50s car its just my personal preference.

a nice okrasa would go well! Cool

Depends naturally from the width of the engine, but at least engine with 78mm stroke and OEM style heads is narrow enough to fit into early Oval's engine bay without any cutting Wink

I was going to fit a bigger engine to my 'Vert too but somehow it doesn't feel at home there even it is a 60's car. The 30hp my Oval had when I bought the car is the best Volkswagen engine I've ever had. It cruised nicely around 90-95km/h and you could discuss with normal voice while driving. The single-tip muffler didn't sound like the pea-shooters do etc etc.

Me and Gav had a conversation about this not too long ago and agreed that if a stock engine is the choice then it would definately be worth considering some vintage performance enhancement if you're gonna fit stuff like Porsche or Empi wheels.
