Type 3 brakes and type 1 brakes are the same, well same discs and calipers.
I wouldn't bother with the discs off me TBH. The discs themselves are f*cked anyway so the only thing you'd use is the calipers, the spindles and backplates wouldn't be any use anymore. Actually the backplates might be the same as type 1 but I don't know for sure. _________________

| that's why I was asking really. So what I need to do is find a complete balljoint bug beam with discs... or get a linkpin beam and aftermarket discs? (Damn wide 5s!!!) |

I've got some greasy old Type 3 Calipers ready for me to rebuild, and I could have sworn they were meatier than the type 1
Also what is the clearance like on adaptors to the brake caliper? I've only ever seen adaptors fitted on drums _________________ "They say the definition of madness is doing the same thing and expecting a different result" The Hives |

I'm pretty sure that fasty is running adaptors but I think he had to fit spacers too.
I'm pretty sure the 67-71 calipers are the same as late bug ones |

Yeah thats right. the 72-73 ones are weird and hard to get parts for. So hope you haven't got a pair of those Craig. _________________

I think later ones are the same as T4 so are a bit harder to find |

So that'll be the case then I'll have the awkward ones (Sod's law )
I was thinking of making up my own adaptors to clear as I've got some chunky billets lying around _________________ "They say the definition of madness is doing the same thing and expecting a different result" The Hives |

If it all works out nicely I may get some of those multi-pot calipers from Heritage (if I can wait that long) and run them with cross drilled and grooved discs. _________________ "They say the definition of madness is doing the same thing and expecting a different result" The Hives |

Has anyone got any experience of this set up?
I cant find any detail on what these add to the track. And I can get a set at a reasonably good price (as soon as the pound actually has more value that toilet paper ) _________________ "They say the definition of madness is doing the same thing and expecting a different result" The Hives |

isn't that what Foxy used on the 65?
I've potentially got a complete balljoint beam setup lined up... and will be running late 5 stud drums as a temporary solution until I can afford to build up the disc setup.
Let the fun begin |

I thought he had the ones that looked like a brake drum centre but couldn't be used with drop spindles _________________ "They say the definition of madness is doing the same thing and expecting a different result" The Hives |

I dare say he'll be along later to correct me I can't actually say I've ever looked at them that closely because of the covers. |

Yeah it looks like Empi have changed their kit. My kit uses a bracket to mount the caliper, and its the weak point. Obviously they realised and changed it. It looks like a good kit now.
It does look to me like there might be an increase in track though. I measured mine and there was an increase of 2mm, but the discs are shaped like a normal drum in the centre, whereas they look flat in the pictures. _________________

Evening chaps, sorry for the late reply on this one.....been a little busy.
Your cars coming along nice Foxy and I like your ideas Craig...
I completed my T1 setup about 18 months back and it drives really nice, but its currently off the road while I build new shock towers, fit my air shocks and fiddle with a rack and Pinion setup....I might even do a body off
I'm running a king and link beam, dropped spindles and Airkewld Brembo's. The beam has caster shims in the top to help itself centre and was narrowed 6". It's a very similar setup to what T3D use as I consulted Puppy and Chris (with the candy square) during the build-up.
I can sit the car on the floor and raise it quite high due to the beam sitting higher than standard, but I did have to cut the lower original beam mounts off first.
I'm in the process of changing the mounting area as I don't like the space above/below the beam mounts and would highly recommend making a strap to hold the bottom area under the car.
Will post up some pics when I get a min.
Any questions, feel free.
